APR launched a platform to assess the recyclability of complete plastic packages

Developed with Recyda, the tool automates the APR Design Guide, detects missing data and incompatibilities, and recommends design improvements in real time. Early access is open to APR's 300-plus members, with public availability expected in late September through three subscription tiers.

The Association of Plastic Recyclers has launched the APR Design Assessment Tool, a digital platform for assessing the technical recyclability of complete plastic packages and product portfolios. Developed with software company Recyda, it converts the rules of the APR Design Guide for Plastics Recyclability—a reference used for decades by North American designers, brands, manufacturers and reclaimers—into an automated system.

Its central innovation is evaluating the package as a system rather than examining components only in isolation. The platform receives data on resins, closures, labels, adhesives, colorants and other elements; identifies missing information; flags potential incompatibilities; and recommends modifications. Results update in real time and place an item into one of APR's four recyclability classifications.

The system can also compare a design with criteria linked to California's SB 343 labeling law and help organize information for extended producer responsibility requirements across the United States and Canada. This may reduce manual work and errors, but it is not automatic legal advice: the applicability of each rule depends on the product, jurisdiction and current regulatory circumstances.

APR presents the platform as a centralized environment with a live ruleset, data-intake and reporting functions, and the capacity to scale from one package to large portfolios. It says direct APR management and access to third-party verification provide stronger support than isolated self-appraisal. Even so, a digital assessment and formal recognition are separate processes and should not be conflated.

Early access is available to APR's more than 300 members. Public availability is expected in late September 2026 through three subscription levels. Options scale from unlimited single-package assessments to portfolio uploads, API integration with corporate systems, analysis of other materials and countries, dashboards and forecasts of extended producer responsibility costs.

The tool can improve decisions before a package is manufactured, while an adhesive, label or material combination can still be changed without the cost of a late redesign. Technical recyclability, however, does not guarantee that an item will be collected, sorted and reprocessed in every community. Infrastructure, consumer access, demand for recovered resin and stream contamination still determine real-world outcomes.

The next test is whether companies use the platform to change packages rather than merely document compliance. APR has announced training on rigid HDPE, rigid PP, PE film and EPR cost assessment. Environmental usefulness will be measured through fewer incompatibilities, higher-quality recovered material and verifiable design decisions; subscription volume alone will not demonstrate a reduction in plastic waste.
