Nationwide deforestation rose 5% from 2024 but remained 31% below the 2021 level. The Amazon accounted for more than 65% of forest loss and its cleared area was virtually unchanged, with illegal land grabbing, extensive cattle ranching and unplanned roads as the main drivers.
A Greenpeace satellite analysis recorded clearing in Santiago del Estero, Salta, Formosa and Chaco between January and June 2026. The territorial distribution of the loss and Salta's increase expose gaps in enforcement, penalties and funding for native-forest protection.
The 2024–2035 Climate Plan aims to cut net emissions 59% to 67% from 2005 levels, demarcate 4.5 million hectares of Indigenous land and expand conservation. Energy and farming projections, however, show that much of the burden will still fall on controlling deforestation.
