The Protos project in Cheshire has entered a new construction phase and aims to capture around 370,000 tonnes of CO2 per year from a facility that recovers energy from non-recyclable waste.
MCi Carbon’s Myrtle plant captures carbon dioxide from an Orica industrial facility in Newcastle and mineralizes it to produce carbonates and silica for use in concrete, paint, glass, plastics and coatings. Its initial scale is limited, but it opens an important discussion on industrial decarbonization and the circular economy.
The European Commission proposed changes to the Emissions Trading System, the bloc’s main climate tool, with a more gradual reduction path after 2030 and stronger support for industrial decarbonization.
